“The germ is nothing, the soil is everything” – Katja Behrens, Homeopath

HOM_0028Every person experiences certain situations to which they are more vulnerable or more likely to react. Being susceptible means being predisposed, liable, or sensitive to the effects of an infectious disease, allergen, or other pathogenic agent – or even being sensitive for a situation e.g. in the workplace or in relationships; lacking immunity or resistance .

Sensitivity is the degree of the predisposition and susceptibility is the nature of it.

Susceptibility might come from genetics, can be inherited, or can come on by different life experiences, like traumas, accidents or other events.

In homeopathy microorganisms like bacteria and viruses are not held responsible but the weak organism and the susceptibility of the patient is mainly considered accountable for the disease.

Susceptibility makes us unique, because each of us reacts individually to different situations.

Good homeopathic treatment changes our core susceptibility, strengthening us, so that we are not affected by a situation or disease agent.

Homeopathy treats the whole person as well as the diseased part. It looks to address the underlying cause of illness. 70% of those that use homeopathy experience improvements in health and wellbeing (from a six year study at Bristol Homeopathic Hospital, 2005).

You can have a free exploratory phone call with me or book an appointment with the clinic.

Allergy and Intolerance Testing – Marianne Andrews

We offer a simple finger-prick test to identify foods which may be causing an adverse effect. The test is a rapid colorimetric ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay) for the measurement of IgG antibodies to a selection of commonly eaten foods. This is sent off to a Lab where their analysis looks at IgG immune responses, ie. delayed responses to foods.  This differs from the NHS testing route which would look at IgE responses which are for immediate reactions.

Over 45% of the population react adversely to foods that they eat, which whilst not life threatening, can have a massive impact on someone’s quality of work and home life.  Food intolerance may cause a range of symptoms including gut symptoms, bloating, headaches, migraines, low mood, fatigue, weight gain and skin problems

It is common for people to try and eliminate foods from their diet to help themselves feel better. Often they don’t know which foods to try and eliminate and have to guess. Should you have multiple intolerances then this method makes it extremely difficult to pinpoint the offending foods.

Testing is painless and the results are available within 7 days.  The results are then discussed at a full consultation, which then looks at your whole diet, and other factors, such as stress, gut bacteria and enzyme levels, hormonal imbalances etc which may be affecting how you are feeling.  I will suggest food replacements, and provide the advice and guidance you need implement any dietary changes with confidence and success.

Marianne Andrews – Nutritional Therapist

Marianne is currently (summer 2016) offering an initial consultation (75 minutes) including full dietary analysis and clinical allergy and intolerance test for £140.

GUT HEALTH/BRAIN HEALTH – Caroline Shaw

Western Society may have ‘conquered’ diseases such as small pox, diphtheria and polio but there has been a virtual epidemic of conditions such as autism, asthma, ADHD, alzheimers, allergies, diabetes, depression, heart disease, cancer, polycystic ovarian syndrome and obesity, to name but a few. Where are we going wrong?

Latest scientific research is validating what Hippocrates said in the third century BC; “All disease begins in the gut.” The link between a healthy microbial flora, that is all the billions of microscopic bacteria that live in (and on) us and a healthy mind/ body is being proven unequivocally.

We really do need an abundance of the good ‘guys’, the beneficial bacteria, to boost our immunity, to help our liver and digestive enzymes work properly, to help generate the ‘feel good’ neurotransmitter Serotonin (80 per cent is generated in the gut rather than the brain) to help regulate and balance our hormones, to help tell us when we’ve had enough to eat and so much more.

Unfortunately, a by-product of a highly industrialized Western society is its toxins. Processed fast foods filled with refined sugars and saturated fats, toxic metals derived from fillings and air pollutants, chlorine in the water supply, medicines such as statins, antibiotics, birth control hormones (which contributes to an environment that is flooded with oestrogens) or the relentless stresses of physical, emotional and mental survival, our body/mind is always on ‘red alert’ and this can produce a chronic inflammatory condition. Inflammatory markers in the blood, such as Cytokines and Lipopolysaccharides (LPS) are shown to be much higher in people with arthritis, depression, anxiety, dementia, irritable bowel syndrome, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, insulin resistance and obesity.

Having enough good bacteria in our guts helps to regulate both the immune and endocrine systems and keep in check the over production of cortisol and adrenaline – the two hormones that can cause so much damage when they are constantly being released.

Sadly, one of the main culprits in the destruction of our healthy, positive bacteria is antibiotics. As a health practitioner, 90 per cent of cases that I see presenting with such conditions as chronic IBS, constipation, fatigue, depression, bloating, skin complaints, auto immune disease and insomnia can be traced back to the over prescription of antibiotics. Recent studies indicate that the disruption of gut bacteria through antibiotics in children may even cause certain cases of autism. In 2000, Dr Richard Sandler published a paper in the Journal of Child Neurology about the correlation between the overgrowth of potentially pathogenic bacteria and autism. The blessing that was penicillin has now become a curse.

For more than sixty years antibiotics have been the default prescription of medical doctors. Farm animals are routinely fed antibiotics to keep them free from disease, but the drug gets into the food chain anyway. Unfortunately, the bugs are rapidly outwitting the medicine that tries to kill them. Anti microbial resistance threatens the effective treatment of a range of infections caused by bacteria, parasites, viruses and fungi.

In 2013, worldwide, there were about 480,000 new cases of drug resistant tuberculosis. Dr Paul Cosford, Director for Health Protection and Medical Director for Public Health England, (PHE) said: “TB remains a critical public health problem, particularly in parts of London and among people from vulnerable communities. Given current trends, within 2 years we are likely to have more new cases of TB each year in the UK than in the whole of the United States.”

There is a high proportion of antibiotic resistance in bacteria that cause common infections i.e. urinary tract infections, pneumonia and septicaemia. Most hospital acquired infections are caused by the bacteria strain MRSA (Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus.) It won’t be long, the medical profession fears, before routine operations such as hip replacements and caesareans are no longer viable.

In the same way that pesticides can play havoc with whole eco systems, such as the quality of nutrients in the soil as well as the health of bees and birds, antibiotics, indiscriminately wipe out colonies of good as well as bad bacteria.

Some of the most remarkable transformations in health that I have witnessed are when clients are able to cleanse and de-toxify their Liver, Small Intestines and Large Intestine (Colon). This is quite a challenging cleansing process but one that can bring extraordinary results.

I remember a client, Judy, who presented with chronic water retention. Her whole body was puffy and bloated. She had inflamed joints that affected her shoulders, knees, elbows, ankles and wrists. She felt chronically tired and was taking anti-depressants. She divulged that life was just not worth living. It had all started, she said, when she had been prescribed strong doses of antibiotics for a recurring respiratory infection several years ago. However hard she tried to lose weight nothing shifted. After she had completed a course of 3-colon hydrotherapy treatments to cleanse her colon, I recommended that she undertook a full intestinal cleanse (this involves taking simple products orally, for one week, while drinking plenty of juices, water and herb teas) followed by a course of high potency good bacteria.

Three months later I saw she was booked in to see me. When I went to reception to collect her I couldn’t find her.

“Caroline,” a voice called out.

I gave a double take. There was Judy. But it wasn’t the same person. This was a svelte, glamorous Judy. She looked wonderful!

“I followed the programme and then repeated it a few weeks later. I’m off the anti-depressants. I feel so much better

It seems clear that by de-toxing our bodies from the accumulation of pathogenic bacteria, viruses, parasite and yeasts and then replacing with a wide spectrum of positive acidophilus and bifido bacterium we can make miracles happen.

The best way to de-tox is to have one to three colon hydrotherapy treatments followed by a full intestinal cleanse. The liver cleanse can be combined with the full intestinal cleanse or undertaken later and then repeated. It is always advisable to have a follow up colon hydrotherapy treatment on the completion of a full intestinal or liver cleanse. After the cleanse it is important to maintain a healthy diet which encourages the growth of good bacteria together with probiotic and prebiotic supplements and foods. I also recommend and can administer high potency rectal probiotic infusions.

I will leave you with an interesting experiment which was conducted in 2013 by UCLA researchers and published in Gastroenterology.

Thirty six women were split into three groups of twelve. For four weeks Group 1 consumed twice daily a yoghurt mixture filled with several probiotics, Group 2 were given a ‘yoghurt’ without any probiotics, and Group 3 had no specific product.

At the beginning, each woman underwent a functional MRI (fMRI) which measure brain activity. After four weeks each in turn was shown images designed to trigger an emotional response. They were looking at pictures of angry or frightened people. The results were astonishing. The women who consumed the yoghurt laced with probiotics showed far less excitability in the parts of the brain related to emotion, cognition and sensory processing. On the other hand the women in the other two groups who did not take the probiotics showed stable or increased activity in this brain network indicating they were more emotionally impacted and disturbed by the images.

Dr Emeran Mayer a professor of medicine and psychiatry summed up the findings, ”The knowledge that signals are sent from the intestine to the brain and that they can be modulated by a dietary change is likely to lead to an expansion of research aimed at finding new strategies to prevent or treat digestive, mental and neurological disorders.”

It seems how we take care of ourselves and our planet is in need of a radical sea-change.

When is your New Year? – Emma Kingscott

When is your New Year?

1st January?  End of January?  Beginning of February?  The beginning of Spring for many countries in the Northern Hemisphere is marked by ancient festivals like Candlemas, St Brigid’s Day and Imbloc, These festivals fall around the time of the first full, or new, moon or the sighting of the first wild snowdrop in bloom, signalling the regeneration from the depths of the dark and cold.  This seems much more like the beginning of a new year than 1st January, don’t you think?

So what is a New Year?  The beginning of 365 consecutive days and a time when we resolve to make things different so that we, and those we love, have more enjoyment.  Well today is the first day of 365 consecutive days, what’s stopping us resolving to make those changes now or whenever feels right for us?  Nothing, your New Year can start whenever you want it to, so when are you going to choose?

Many people won’t be reading this and will look to start their New Year on 1st January; some will be able to successfully go it alone to achieve their plans and other may look for support in doing so; perhaps that might be a tutor, a personal trainer, an alternative therapist or a slimming class.  Others will consider coaching, as you may have done, but might not feel ready for one-to-one coaching.  For those of you who have considered coaching, Osmosis Dynamics are launching their online coaching package at the beginning of January 2016 giving you six weeks of online modules and coaching via smartphone, tablet, laptop and more.  It is an excellent resource for you to be able to stop and look at where you are and how you would like things to be, so that you are ready to start your New Year on a day that is your very own personal New Year’s Day!

To ensure you are one of the first to receive full details of this new self-managed coaching product and to have a chance to buy at the significantly reduced launch price, please provide your details via this link – New Online Coaching Product News – and keep an eye on your emails for full details of what you will find when you purchase and log-in to your online coaching programme.

Classical Homeopathy for Autism – Katja Behrens

Classical Homeopathy for Autism

Homeopathy has been used with success to alleviate mental and physical symptoms of autism. Many parents have reported significant improvement in their autistic children after the children received homeopathic care. In classical Homeopathy, remedy selection involves addressing the person in totality by looking at the following:

– Behaviours

– Physical Symptoms

– Emotional Symptoms

– Genetic weaknesses (also identified as miasms or constitutions)

– Environmental factors such as vaccinations, drugs or other environmental toxins.

If the remedy is correctly selected on the totality of symptoms, then improvement may be seen in all areas. Homeopaths try to determine the individual’s susceptibility, i.e. individual weaknesses in the vital force, to prevent a re-occurrence of symptoms. The first stage of the progress is to take a full case and give the remedy that most closely matches the individual’s expression of their disease.

What is Different about Homeopathic Treatment?

Mainstream science still stands helpless in front of this problem of autism and ASD. There are many tools but not much success.

In Homeopathy we approach this phenomenon in a completely different way.

“Like cures like is the principle of love. You observe and you acknowledge what is there.”

Homeopathy allows us to use empathy in a skilful manner to find the remedy. This we do by using the principle of like cures like, the principle of cure which governs homeopathic prescribing. The first step is not to fix a problem, the first step is to acknowledge the uniqueness and individuality of a patient.

What we are looking at in Homeopathy is the ailment itself. How we experience it – on all levels. We look at it in deep manner and try to understand what is happening for this other human being.

Our interest is in finding the unique pattern of the individual child, who often suffers from a whole range of different symptoms.

What is ASD?

If we focus only on all the outer symptoms ASD children produce, there is no way of going deeper.

Most patients will have issues with their digestive system, hyperactivity, lots of anxieties, fixations and obsessions, nervous and strange behaviour and many other common symptoms.

But all these expressions are not really ASD. They are reflections of a deeper underlying state of experience.

Our goal is to find one remedy for that underlying state . It has to fit the whole state which is expressed in the physical, mental and emotional symptoms. The core has to be lifted, otherwise we just chase symptoms and end up affecting only the physical plane and some outward expressions.

Lack of spontaneous eye contact, spontaneous speech, spontaneous interaction – this is ASD.

All other symptoms are peripheral.

Homeopathy can also finally loosen up the dependency we have on supplements and medication. This dependency is often very strong in this particular illness. If we just do surgery on the physical symptoms and outer expressions they will never stop appearing in one form or another. If we get the core better, all other levels will get better also.

The Homeopath will try to find out how the child is affected. What is happening for the child inside. How is the child experiencing the disorder it lives with.

The inner World has to be unlocked.

We have to reach the cause and deepest core of all the problems. We do that systematically through a long inquiring consultation using all the homeopathic tools and true empathy – the skill of listening and observing. We don’t give the same remedy to everybody. The remedy will match this individual in the closest way.

An Example

We look at one symptom like e.g. spinning, which represents the core, the experience of the child.

We will try to find out what the trigger is for this behaviour:e.g. being left alone outside of the house.

We will explore what this child is experiencing in this situation. For example, they might feel forsaken, as if great and sudden violence will come to them.

This experience – this sensation – relates to a state characteristic of a particular remedy. When we give this remedy we are matching that sensation and the result is that the child does not have to produce these symptoms any more.

The same outward expression, like spinning, can correspond to a different inner experience from one child to the next, which means that the matching remedy will be completely different.

When we reach that level in our consultation than we recommend the remedy.

If we as Homeopaths are in a few cases not able to significantly improve the child’s condition, this doesn’t mean that Homeopathy doesn’t work, it means that we did not find the correct remedy.

What we expect:

Gradual improvement in the whole state, peripheral and core. Symptoms diminish in intensity and frequency. The improvement in the core should come first.

If just one peripheral gets better we often have to change remedy.

Case management is extremely important even with the right remedy. There has to be constant adjustment with such a complex disease as autism. Seeing if we are on the right track, staying with a remedy, adjusting the remedy.

Treating autism can be a long-term project, taking months or even years, as the Homeopath deals with various layers and tries to understand the individual well enough to select the true match, the simillimum. When a remedy is found that resonates, the effect is usually quite evident and significant improvements can be seen.

Homeopaths ask parents to not introduce other treatments or interventions in the earlier stages of Homeopathy, so they can observe the direct effects of the homeopathic treatment.

Gut Health – Caroline Shaw ARCH CNHC ARICA ITEC

GUT HEALTH by Caroline Shaw ARCH CNHC ARICA ITEC

photo 3 As a child of the 1950/60s my diet was quite simple: Cornflakes for breakfast with cow’s milk and sugar, lunch at school; typically meat pie and rice/tapioca pudding. Then home for tea; white bread banana sandwiches laden with sugar. My main fluid intake was tea with milk plus three teaspoons of sugar or orange squash.

All of this served me well until the addition of Mercury fillings became the tipping point for ill health. I was frequently felled by tonsillitis and various chronic bronchial conditions. This in turn was rigorously treated with anti-biotics. By the time I was 14yrs old I was struggling with energy levels. I lived with constant tiredness and fatigue. The capability of my brain paralleled my physical decline. From being a child who was effortlessly top of the class, memory retention and concentration became dramatically compromised.

Aged 19 I took myself to the Doctor. “I feel tired all the time.” I complained. He took one look at me and said, “Nothing that a good tonic wouldn’t fix.” He sealed my disillusion with conventional medicine.

It wasn’t until my early 30s that I began to feel some sense of aliveness. I was living and working at Green Farm Nutrition Centre helping to edit and write for their magazine. Under the influence of Celia and Brian Wright my diet changed. I cut out all refined sugars. My breakfast became porridge oats, cooked mainly with water. Plenty of vegetables and salad delivered from a local organic farm and simple fish and chicken proteins. I also radically reduced my tea intake and drank plenty of water. Then I had sessions of Colon Hydrotherapy. The change was borderline miraculous. At last I had energy! My head cleared. My aching legs sprang lightly on the ground. My skin glowed and I felt an enduring sense of wellbeing.

Now as a Colon Hydrotherapist/Nutrition Advisor with over 25 years experience, I have traced most people’s health problems to a diet that is or was heavily dependent on processed/acidic foods, exposure to toxic metals/chemicals and the overuse of anti- biotics/steroid/hormone medication. This concoction can lead to a variety of debilitating and chronic health issues such as fatigue, water retention, skin problems, dull skin pallor, bloating and indigestion, constipation and/or diarrhoea, aching joints, memory/concentration loss, depression and anxiety. These in turn can be the precursor to serious life threatening illnesses.

Our health and vitality, physically and mentally, is intricately linked to the microbiology of our gut. Whatever we ingest either through the air, liquid or foods or medication does have an effect. The so called ‘good bacteria’ grows and flourishes in in an environment rich with digested Alklaine foods such as vegetables, salads and fruit that are free of pesticides and preservatives plus plenty of fresh water. The so called bad bacteria, proliferates when we ingest Acid foods such as processed meats, grain and dairy, refined sugars, alcohol, caffeine and toxic chemcials/metals etc.

The removal of the toxic impact of these substances including Mercury and ‘Candida’ type organisms in the gut can be achieved in four main ways.

  1. Change your diet to one that is predominately Alkaline and also suits your Blood Group Type. (Blood Group Testing available with me at CHHC)
  2. Embark on specific Cleansing programmes, such as a Full Intestinal Cleanse or/and Liver Cleanse (I can recommend the Cleanses appropriate for you.)
  3. Have Colon Hydrotherapy.
  4. Re –supplement with positive bacteria such as acidophilus and probiotics.

These can be taken orally and rectally.

Various implants can also be given during the Colon Hydrotherapy treatment to help speed up the restoration of healthy intestinal flora. These include anti-fungal/anti-parasitic herbs and tinctures, kidney/liver tonics and wheatgrass, probiotic implants and infusions*. Please ask me for more information on your next visit.

Following this four-step programme, you should soon begin to experience a return to your natural health and vitality.

*High potency probiotic infusion requires a double session and is the best way to repopulate the large intestine with positive bacteria.
