Colonic Hydrotherapy or irrigation is a method of de-toxifying the body to help in its natural healing process. Warm, filtered water is introduced into the colon to assist the elimination of stored faecal matter, gas, mucus and toxic substances. Colonics is basically an extension of an enema which has been used as a curative tool for thousands of years stretching back to ancient Egypt. The difference is that with Colonics you can clean the whole of the Colon rather than a part.
During the first treatment a detailed case history is taken followed by an explanation of the procedure. The colonic itself will take between 30 to 45 minutes during which time water is gently introduced into the colon via the rectum whilst the use of special techniques including ultra-sonic massage, acupressure and reflexology points stimulate the release of toxins and stored matter.
How many treatments are needed?
May vary from one to several depending on each individual case.
What conditions can it help?
Constipation, Diarrhoea, Colitis, Spastic Colon, Liver complaints, Halitosis, Flatulence, Haemorrhoids, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Candida, Skin problems (acne, eczma and psoriasis), Bloating, Asthma, Allergies, Fatigue, Depression, Anxiety, Lethargy may all be helped by the detoxifying effect of Colon Hydrotherapy.
The Association and Register of Colon Hydrotherapists
The association was founded in 1987 by Dr Milo Siewart, Doctor of Medicine and Doctor of Chiropractic, who, single-handedly, revived and modernised this therapy in the UK. Since that time ARCH has been the lead organisation and is registered with the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council. Arch members are recognised as naturopathic colon hydrotherapists.
Your therapist will only recommend products she genuinely feels will help your digestive system to function at its best. For instance good bacteria which is so important for a healthy gut is sourced to supply high potency, human strain, live bacteria shown to be stable, effective in the gut and acid resistant. These can be administered at the end of the treatment as an implant/infusion or bought to be taken afterwards.
Sadly, the possible over use of antibiotics which kill good and bad bacteria indiscriminately can sometimes leave the long term health of our guts compromised and lead to problems such as IBS.

“I had been struggling since Uni. A series of chest infections when I was 20 years old led to several doses of antibiotics. Afterward my gut went into ‘melt-down’. I either had bloating and constipation or cramps and diarrhoea. I am so relieved I made the decision to have colon hydrotherapy. Having Colon hydrotherapy and making small changes to my diet, helped turn around what had become a chronic and debilitating condition. Now I have regular bowel movements, and my stomach is flat. It’s helped my skin too!” – Female, aged 33
“I had been under a lot of pressure with work. I was drinking more, eating more, mainly to relieve the stress. My gut was permanently bloated and my energy levels were flat. I felt ‘old’ and my joints were starting to creak. Having colon hydrotherapy has given me a new lease of life. The bloating and gas have disappeared. I have tons more energy, my joints feel loose and my head feels clear. It has given me the boost I needed to get out of the vicious circle I was in. I’m eating and drinking sensibly again now. All this has helped my stress levels enormously. I couldn’t recommend it enough.” – Male, aged 45
